Getting email addresses is essential for any ecommerce businesses.
In most cases it’s the first form of direct, personal engagement you have with your customer after they’ve visited your website. Not only does capturing emails from your website allow you to keep in touch with current customers, but it’s also a great way to acquire new leads that you can hopefully convert into future sales down the road.
There’s no magic solution when it comes to how to capture emails on your website. While some may suggest that an email capture landing page is the best practice, it’s important to remember that most of your website visitors have come to your site for a specific reason, so you’ll need to act quickly in order to actually capture their email address.
We looked at over 150 of the best direct-to-consumer ecommerce brands to see how (or if) they were capturing email addresses on their website.
The two ways most brands capture email addresses on their homepage are either with an email capture popup or in the bottom footer of their homepage. We found that the best practice for capturing an email address is to use a promotional popup with an introductory discount and unique copy that includes a great call to action (we love the word “Unlock“)
Most brands will use their homepage popup to incentive their website visitors with a discount offer or promotion for entering their email address. This can range from a small discount off their first purchase to a larger contest or giveaway that customers are automatically entered in once they’ve entered their email address.
A simple form submission in your website’s footer is also a great idea, but it’s important to distinguish the two email capture types and to have unique wording for each one.
When analyzing over 150 ecommerce websites for the best practices in capturing email addresses, it’s clear that the brands that are the most successful in capturing emails are the ones that include a captivating offer at the beginning and are transparent in how they plan on communicating with you in the future.
